Quarantine Wedding Ideas
WE THE BIRDS is intimately connected to the wedding industry— a large portion of our custom macaron orders are made specially for weddings and we often host small nuptial gatherings in our event venue. Wedding season is upon us and we know many couples are unsure how to proceed with their upcoming wedding dates. As the world navigates the way forward in this "new normal", more and more couples are forgoing the wait to get married. Over the last few weeks bridal blogs and social platforms have flooded with couples getting married over Zoom, in public parks, in backyards, and even on the streets of NYC. If your special day is one of the millions of events that have been cancelled or rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this is for you. We're here to declare: you CAN have an intentional, BEAUTIFUL wedding in quarantine!
As the old saying goes, "with an open mind, anything is possible!" There are so many creative alternatives to the traditional wedding (and we promise, they're not as bad as you think). In this post, we explore all the ways you can still get married on your original date, include your loved ones in the celebration and support your local wedding vendors (all while keeping everyone safe and healthy)!
How to say, "I do" while maintaining social-distance:
Where
Wedding Venues: Many wedding venues are quickly pivoting to offer Quarantine Packages. These offerings are typically discounted and give couples the opportunity to exchange vows with their officiant (via technology or standing at a 6-foot distance) and snap some stunning pictures on-site. Google "Wedding Venues helping couples during COVID in [your city]" to find options near you!
- WE THE BIRDS Event Venue - Our small event space can accommodate those couples looking for a clean, minimal backdrop to exchange their vows and "I do"! We're happy to offer a deep discount rental fee ($75 / hour) for couples looking to use our space for this purpose! Please email rentals@wethebirds.com and let us know you're interested in a Quarantine Wedding. Note: this is for max 6 people including the couple.
- The SchoolHouse - One of our favorite wedding venues! This historic landmark has been renovated and transformed into a gorgeous event venue with clean white walls, industrial details and windows all over allowing natural light to flood the space. The SchoolHouse has quickly responded to this new demand and has added quarantine packages to their offerings. Check out their Quarantine Packages. Head to their instagram to see pics of the space! [P.s. we got to be models for a styled shoot there last year!]
At Home: We absolutely believe you can create a beautiful wedding in your home (no matter where you live). Set up in your living room, dining room or backyard! Pick a spot in your home and transform it into your wedding venue!
Online Ceremony & Virtual Guest List: Informing your friends and family when and where to join online is paramount. Send a digital invite to all your guests that includes the link to where you'll be streaming the moment.

Mailable Guest Gifts
This is where you can get really creative! Since you won't be seeing your guests in person (and sometimes the interwebs can feel like a cold, impersonal place), send something in the mail to every guest. Nothing will touch your loved ones like receiving a special package personalized with your wedding details. This is really the only way to reach out and "touch" all of your guests in a tangible way.
We are bias, of course, but this is where WE THE BIRDS macarons shine bright! Send a luxe gift box of macarons customized with your wedding details (date, initials, special designs, etc) to every guest! We will also include a personalized note with every package. Fill out our custom order form and we will set up a virtual consultation to hash out all the details. We are ready and prepared to help you reach your guests in a uniquely meaningful way with boxed macaron messages!

Photography
Whether or not you will be sharing the moment live (via Zoom, social media, etc), you'll DEFINITELY want pictures of the celebration to savor the memory and share with loved ones.
- Local Photographers: Reach out to a local photographer to book for the occasion. Many photographers are offering quarantine-friendly services and are willing to come ahead of time, capture the details of your special day and be there for the ceremony.
- Ask a Friend
- Do it Yourself! If you want to be extra careful, you can ABSOLUTELY capture the occasion on camera yourself! All you really need is a tripod and your phone (here's the tripod we use and here's a phone mount). You can use the self-timer function to capture stills of the two of you. PRO-TIP: Record the ceremony as a video. You can pull stills images from the video later!

What to Wear
These are extraordinary times. Let the outfit be the same! Wear the pieces you were planning to wear to your wedding! Ladies: wear your designer dress the whole day. Take some extra, high-fashion pics wearing the dress in unexpected settings: in your living room, go outside, walk down the street, hide in the bushes... remember: if you feel like you look ridiculous, that means you've got the makings for a COOL PHOTO!
OR -- Step out of the ordinary and wear something you would have never worn to your originally planned wedding. Ladies: Save the designer dress for your after-party (once quarantine is over); opt for a modern jumpsuit. Guys: Forget the suit & tie; opt for something colorful. Couples: Match in coordinating outfits!
OR -- Lean into the relaxed vibe of fashion at home! Find a slip dress that resembles a night gown. Go with a more laid-back, flowing dress. Hell, get ultra- creative and make a dress out of bed sheets!

Decor
Set the scene— DON'T SKIP THIS, especially if you've decided to do this at home! You'll want to make this special. Work together to set up the space! Think of it as a fun bonding activity. Even though this celebration is just going to be for 2, the scene is what will make this feel like a wedding! The scene is what you'll be capturing in all your pictures. Get creative! Maybe an archway out of materials you have at your house.
Flowers: Ask your preferred local florist to create a centerpiece for your dining table (many florists are doing delivery services right now). Or DIY it! Forage around your backyard / neighborhood for seasonal plants & stems to use in your floral arrangements. Ask your neighbors to leave some flowers from their yard on your doorstep!
Tablescape: Design a gorgeous place setting for just the two of you. Take the time to set up a dining area for your post-ceremony feast— it is an important element of the celebration. You can rent pieces from an event rental company OR use pieces you own.

Celebration-for-Two
Dinner-for-two: You must have a post-ceremony feast! How you'd like to do this, is totally up to your preferences! Set up a gorgeous charcuterie board (or order one from Fount Board & Table). Order take-out from your favorite local restaurant (support small businesses!). Find a caterer or private chef who is doing meal delivery services. Cook a meal together.
Dessert: CUT THE MACARONS (or cake)! ;) Toast to your new marriage with macarons and bubbly! Order from our curated flavors & designs here. For custom orders (custom flavors, colors, and designs): fill out the custom order form and we will set up a virtual consultation. We are here to make your wedding macaron dreams come true!
Romance: Put on your favorite song and dance in the moonlight. TIP: Make a playlist together of your favorite songs (you'll love being able to reference this playlist for anniversaries)! Lay on a blanket, outside under the stars together. Talk about your dreams for the future. Write these down! This super-intimate celebration is such a beautiful opportunity for the two of you to focus on each other and your love.
---
We hope you're feeling properly inspired now! This list is just a starting place! There are so many creative ways to marry beautifully AND also keep your guests included in a special way. Let the restrictions of this pandemic give you permission to FLY ABOVE, as our Hope Collection encourages. Look at this pandemic as an opportunity to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience— trade tradition for something totally unique.
With love & inspiration
